Compare Table Definitions

The Compare Table Definitions tool is a powerful feature that allows you to quickly compare the definitions of two single tables, or compare the definitions of multiple tables in differentdata sources by name. You can compare most of the metadata about the columns, indexes and keys such as column name, type, size, default value, etc. The feature will also notify you if columns exist in one table and not the other.

This feature is very useful when you have two databases or several tables that need to be kept structurallyequivalent, such as a staging and development database setup. If you have ever found yourself in a situationin which you spent several days editing and adding to a staging database but now have to update a productiondatabase with those same changes (which could possibly be a different type of database altogether), then thisfeature will automatically find those differences which will help you avoid doing a table-by-table compare yourself.

Compare Single Tables

To compare a single table with another table, select the source and destination connections and databases, and then select the source and destination tables making sure that the Compare Individual Tables radio buttonis selected. You can then customize which data is compared.

Compare Multiple Tables

To compare multiple tables, select the source and destination connections and databases, and then select the table names that you would like to compare making sure that the Compare Tables By Name radio buttonis selected. You can then customize which data is compared.

Understanding and Saving Results

Once you have run the feature, the differences will be repesented in a table. The difference and type will be shown as well as the source and destination field and table names. You can view the table in a text format which youcan then copy, save and print.
